Who and what?

Mon Sep 13, 2004, 2:02 AM
Who are we? That's the question I feel compelled to ask myself. By me, I mean my generation... Those aged 16 to 25 or so. We are the ones who fell just short of the alternative area, just short of Generation X or Generation Next or whatever the media decided to call it that week.

The truth is that almost everything in our pop culture we have is a hand-me-down from generations coming before us. Green Day is one of my favorite bands. It was also one of my brother's. 10 year old Nirvana songs are played regularly on the radio, mixed in with retro style bands like the Strokes, the Vines, etc. I believe that the "modern music," such as that by Incubus, Black Eyed Peas, Hoobastank and so forth suck. AFI and All-American Rejects don't speak for me. Nor do I believe they speak for those around me.

Our generation has no great role model. We have Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera, Carson Daly, Frankie Muniz, Ashton Kutcher, and a dozen other representatives. What you see in these "role models" is a completel lack of motivation, of want, of goals and aspirations. Celebrities my age are so disconnected from their peers that there's no way we can possibly relate to them.

I believe that our generation is truly looking for a voice. We yearn for a heritage. And I hope that one day, whoever or whatever it is, it calls to us. Until then, we will remain what we are today. Isolated, alone, secretive. Waiting for a label to come along. After all... What generation would ever want to be forgotten?
